The second instalment in the Jack Poole trilogy sees the detective go deeper into dark corners of Los Angeles in the 1950s. Poole takes on a case requiring him to recover a computer algorithm that has been created by witchcraft. As he ventures further into the case, dark mystical powers surface, threatening to crush his will to live and imprison him for life. Set in Pasadena in 1952. ​
